OUR INSIDER TIP: THE HISTORISCHE STUBE
The small and cosy Historische Stube on the second floor of the Historisches Kaufhaus is a real gem: it was designed and built with historic flair in 1878, based on a design by local architectural great, Fritz Geiges, as a parlour for the Breisgau historical society Schau-ins-Land (‘Look to the country’) to meet in. The charming thing about it is the interior design in the historicist style. It appears late medieval, but it is not. The interior simply reflects how the architects and historians of the time imagined the Middle Ages. The atmospheric enrichment for every small but fine event. Convince yourself virtually of the special ambience of the Historische Stube.
