The founder and namesake of the foundation is Freiburg native and top footballer Matthias Ginter, who started his career at SC Freiburg and was on the German national team in 2014. The purpose of the Matthias Ginter Foundation, which he founded in 2018 with his wife Christina, is to support mentally, physically and socially disadvantaged children in the Freiburg area. At the Foundation’s second charity gala held in September 2019, the 120 guests were invited to the impressive setting of the Historisches Kaufhaus in Freiburg. At the request of the event organisers, the large Kaisersaal was equipped with their own furniture in a banquet format. Among the guests were numerous prominent personalities from the city and the footballing world, including former coach of the national team Jogi Löw, mayor of Freiburg Martin Horn and Bundesliga players such as Christian Günter and Dominique Heintz. Highlights of the event, which also of course aimed to raise money, included a tombola and an auction of collector’s items such as football kits from the German national team and the Brazil kit belonging to international player Neymar. The Ginter family and the Foundation team raised several thousand euros in donations at this gala evening at the Historisches Kaufhaus, 100% of which was put into the Foundation’s projects.
